That's actually kinda funny, even if it's really cringe!
If you want it a little more technical you could say, "I heard the electron "shell" gets bigger if you go down the column"
She might appreciate the extra effort!
For context, the electron shell refers to how far away from the atom the electrons occupy space. When you go down the coloumn on the periodic table the atoms in the group are having more or less the same electron affinity (the pull exerted by the nucleous on the electrons) but the electronegarivity is significantly reduced since we are adding electron shells to the atom.

Seems like you managed it well over text, and she has accepted your frame. For future refrence, gotta make sure the pull is calibrated specifically if it's after a day date.
