There is some kind of doctor's office adjacent to where I work. As I am leaving my job (flexible hours), I generally leave on the late side and it's dark outside. As I pull out of my parking spot, I've been noticing an attractive female nurse/dental assistant/etc. smoking a cigarette on a regular basis. I didn't think doctor's offices were open that late (??) I gather that she's taking a smoke break and then has to return to work. Keep in mind she is standing a bit of a ways down, but not that far from the entrance to my workplace. Which, if any, is the right approach? I have very little experience, but I am motivated to shoot my shot in this case.
-Walking up and asking for a light (I don't smoke but perhaps an icebreaker)
-Walking up, are you single?
-Driving by and saying something out the window
-Go into her building hoping to bump into her - ask for directions (LMAO)
-Too risky since it's a few doors down from work

Yeah, and I guess I should fix up my attire a bit. I usually go to work super casual. Any tips on conversation - talk about her work schedule? I'm guessing I'll have a short 5 minute window. Have to test the waters and see if I'm her type/if she's single. And all of this is hinging on passing by at the right time before she has to return to work. I have seen her by chance generally about once a month, maybe twice.
Ok, so let's say she's all about it. My thought is to get her number, get a better sense of her schedule, and then try to set up plans based on that.
If she is sort of lukewarm, what would be a way to win her over?
you're overthinking it. Have good energy, keep eye contact and get small talk going. If the vibe is good just say "we should go out sometime. Let me grab your number"
Who knows how she'll react. Don't start thinking about what could happen, just go and find out for yourself.

That's really good stuff! Do girls ever ask where you're going? If you're honest--say, going home to parents--it could make you sound like a loser. If you lie and say going out with friends, they might request to come out with you. Before you ask, yes, I do have a few friends--not a lot.
Me - "Hey i have to get back it was fun talking to you, what's your number so we can do it again"
Her - "Oh, where are you going back to? Your mom's basement? You're some random guy. Why should I give you my number?"
Would I highlight the work thing in that we work like one building over from each other?

Shes not going to (at least not the first time you approach her. Thats like a first date topic)... but if she asks about living arrangements and you don't want to say mother basement, I'd probably just lie tbh lol something like it's super temporary just moved back from college and still getting my living situation sorted. Something like that
If she does say something you could just say I only had a min, I have to get back to work/friends waiting on me. I actually work right over there.. or some joke about getting back to saving children from fires
