I was told to use
“ can I tell you a secret”
“ I was thinking about you, something about you “
“ list the thing xxx”

I usually just keep it simple for situations like this
Some callback humor, or a simple “how goes it over in xyz”. Some minimal banter and then go for plans
Many times you can just go for plans though and the above steps aren’t needed. Feel her out
