I think more conversation was needed. Once she said “yeah that would be good” you could have asked “what’s your schedule like?” to get her a bit more invested and solidify the date more

yeah agree with this. Her "yeah that would be good" is a soft commitment, jumping too hard on to that is gonna push her away. Probably would have been better to say something like "Shoot me your # and we can set something up"

That last text was a big mistake. The second to last text was a smaller mistake.

"Cool shoot me your number for romantic purposes."
At that point he might as well just say, "Ok, I need your number so I can have sex with you later." I think she would appreciate the honesty, honestly.
Then he makes it more awkward by saying, "If you are too nervous, I understand." How do women read? She's going to be thinking, "Should I be nervous? Why would he use that word?" He just cemented her aversion.

@John Jacobs has an interesting theory that sounds very plausible.
I will add that "for romantic purposes" is really something that will only sound good if you have joked with the word romantic before. Otherwise it comes out of no where & it can sound neutral or bad.
Lastly, sometimes it just happens
